The Chi-Lites - "Stop What You're Doin'"

Here's a nice cut by the Chi-Lites that I picked up a few weeks ago, and has been stuck in my head since. Even in 1984, most of the group's songs were being written by Eugene Record, but this single from the Steppin' Out LP was penned by Amir Bayyan, who was responsible for some other great boogie tracks such as Larry Wu's sublime "Let Me Show You" and "You Gotta Get Up" by Majik. I like the instrumental first verse of this 12" mix.

"Stop What You're Doin'" made it to 33 on the R 'n B charts.

Soft Metals - The Cold World Melts

Ian & Patricia, the two analog synth fanatics from the Northwest who make up Soft Metals, have been making awesome music together in an italo/bodymusic/house style that's pretty fresh. Check out "The Cold World Melts" on YouTube, or download it from their Soundcloud page, and if you're near SF, come see them June 25 at Li Po Lounge! (Click the flier for more info.)

Central Line - Walking Into Sunshine

A track I never get tired of from Brit-funk group Central Line. The buoyant keyboard lines, synthesized bass and crisp drums give this song an airy groove that feels like, well, sunshine.

Written by keyboardist Lipson Francis, percussionist Linton Beckles, and producer Roy Carter of Heatwave, the single scraped the bottom of the US Pop charts in 1981, but dance music aficionados know it best as a staple of Larry Levan's Paradise Garage playlists. Check out Larry's remix on YouTube:

The last Modern Dance night was great fun! 'Bout to do it again this Sunday:

"For the May 9th edition of Modern Dance, we'll be celebrating the birthdays of our special guest DJs: Mike Perry and Matt Wilder!

Mike & Matt have played alongside international guests like Thomas Fehlmann & Bvdub, plus SF's biggest DJs at their ambient/chillout party Afterglow, but expect club music with beats aplenty for Modern Dance! Acid, minimal, deep house and club classics all get thrown into the mix at this party!

Chris Taylor & Jordan Heyser will be warming things up earlier in the night with vinyl selections both new & old. See you on the dancefloor!"

This track will be in my bag:

We're exited to be presenting a DJ set from Blondes this Sunday at Modern Dance!

"Blondes are two jam-prone Brooklyn dudes who met at Ohio's Oberlin College and bonded over their love of musical improvisation and DFA. Both in their mid-20s, Zach Steinman and Sam Haar make spaced-out dance music that has roots in Giorgio Moroder synth workouts and Boards of Canada wispiness. Their songs are blissfully patient and tend to unfurl effortlessly, as if they have all the time in the world."

DJs Chris Taylor & Jordan Heyser will be packing an eclectic selection of dance tunes to keep your feet busy till last call.
